From Shame to Sacred: Reclaiming Sensuality through Yoga

A journey from sexual shame to embodied pleasure

For generations, women have been judged, ridiculed, and silenced for expressing their sexuality. From ancient Roman dress codes to modern-day social media harassment, slut-shaming has been a tool of control — one that punishes boldness, censors desire, and disconnects us from our bodies.

I’ve felt it firsthand. I've been labeled, shamed, told to tone it down, to cover up, to stay quiet. But shame doesn’t just live in the mind — it settles in the body. It tightens the jaw, clamps down on the pelvis, numbs sensation, and convinces us that pleasure is dangerous or selfish.

“Sexuality is almost always associated with shame and the core of feeling flawed and unacceptable, leading to a feeling of unworthiness and, therefore, unloved.”
The Roots of Pelvic Floor Yoga by Heather Dolson

Sexual shame is woven into our culture. It teaches us that we can be sexy — but not too much. That we can express — but only in ways that make others comfortable. And when we break those silent rules? We’re punished.

But here’s what I’ve learned:
Shame cannot survive in the presence of curiosity, compassion, and embodiment.

When I discovered yoga — especially the practices of Kundalini, Tantra, and pelvic floor awareness — I began the journey of returning to myself. These ancient practices didn’t ask me to perform or prove anything. They asked me to feel. To breathe. To soften. To listen.

They honored the body as sacred — not something to hide, fix, or judge. Through movement, breath, and awareness, I began to unwind the shame that had lived in my tissues for years. I awakened my pelvic wisdom. I reclaimed my pleasure — on my terms.

Yoga isn’t just about flexibility or fitness. It’s a reclamation. A remembering.
It’s how we come home to ourselves.

To the women carrying shame in their bones:
You are not broken.
You are not too much.
Your desires are not wrong.
You are sacred.

And you are worthy of the full spectrum of your sensual aliveness.
